A Church in Madera (The Ranchos for you locals) has been handing out free shot glasses at local bars as a way to get people to their church.
Read the article here.
The shot glasses read something like, "Give us a Shot" and it gave church contact information. The Chasers Bar on Avenue 12 gave the shot glasses away when people ordered a shot and requested the glass. The owner reported selling more shots than normal.
What do you think about this?
I've talked to people who think that it's "enabling" and "contributory" and thus might NOT be the best idea. I've also talked to people who love the concept and have no issues with it whatsoever.
I will remain neutral for the moment. What do you think about this? Is it wrong? Does it seem to condone or enable unhealthy behavior? Does it contribute toward alcoholism, drunkenness, or drunk driving?
ADDENDUM: Somebody asked me a good question, "Does 1Corinthians 8:9 come into play here?"
By the way, the local church isn't the only church to do this recently. Watch this Fox News report.

Hey...why'd you move your blog? Anyway, I think this is a great idea. Jesus wouldn't have been out there condemning those in the bars. Usually the ones he condemned were the ones in the churches being hypocritical. And there is nothing wrong with having a shot at a bar. We as Christians have created a new set of rules based on a verse here and there but missing the true picture of what the Christian life is. The bible says you shouldn't get drunk, it doesn't say you shouldn't drink. And yet Christians treat bars like a gateway directly to hell. I believe that if Jesus was around today, the bar is where he would be. I believe the church should be more like the song "I love this bar" by Toby Keith, accepting people as they are and realizing that God doesn't condemn sin because it doesn't meet his standards but because it hurts us. Sin is painful, as it should be, and we need to treat non-christians as people in need, people in pain, sick people. They need the healer and we are the hands and feet of that healer. As the song goes, "they will know we are christians by our love", not by our standards and not by how good we look on the outside.
